Kennedy spoke his name, and then the dam broke as everything hit him all at once. Grown men weren’t supposed to cry. There were better ways to deal with things, but in that moment, he couldn’t stop it. It was a tsunami of grief gushing out of him, and tears streamed down his face.
Circling her arms around his neck, she pulled him close. “I’m so sorry. Those aren’t the exact right words, but, oh, Ryder, my heart breaks for you.”
Ryder grabbed her and buried his face in her neck. He didn’t have any more words at the moment. Nothing that would come close to touching how he felt. He’d failed the people who had depended on him, and there was nothing he could do to change it.
Most of his nightmares were him walking back in time, desperate to alter things, only to watch the events unfold like they were happening in real time.
His captors didn’t know it, but from his cage, he could see what happened to Gunner. The things his friend endured. He’d hear Elijah scream at times, even Mason. Then there were Noah and Kolby. He could hear their screams, see their torment.
When they’d come home after their rescue, they’d all dealt with what they’d been through in different ways, but none of them would have had to if it weren’t for Ryder’s bad intel.
“I can’t imagine what it’s been like to keep that inside. To hold on to that grief for so long. Even if it was bad intel that took you to that village, would it have changed anything?”
He took a breath but kept his face in her neck. “I don’t know.”
“I do. From what I’m hearing, the kind of man you are and the kind of men you were surrounded by, there’s no way you would’ve walked away. It wouldn’t have mattered how many guerillas were there.”
“They suffered because of me.”
“No, they didn’t. They suffered because they were brave and honorable. They suffered because of bad men. And you’ve suffered long enough, Ryder.”
He sat back but wouldn’t make eye contact. “Have I?”
She took his face in her hands, making him look at her. Tears ran down her cheeks. “Yeah, you have. I knew you were a good man. I knew it.” Her voice trembled. “And nothing has changed that.”
At that, Rufus popped up and wedged himself between them, licking Ryder’s face as Kennedy laughed.
“Oh, stop. I don’t need a bath.” Ryder moved to get away from Rufus’s tongue and wiped his eyes. “Seriously, dude, stop.”
Rufus barked and took his spot next to Ryder again.
“He’s proud of you, and so am I.” She sniffed. “You do know we’ll need to talk about this more. This isn’t a one-time type of conversation.”
Nodding, Ryder said, “Yeah, I know.”
“And it’s going to take time to work through it. It’s not an overnight thing.”
“Yeah, I know that too.”
She smiled. “I just didn’t want you thinking it was and then getting upset.”
He shook his head. “I won’t. I know it’ll take some time and it’s not over.
